Amendment to Weddings

So the wedding isn't all about how people look. It's how my family views it, but my mom has come to agree with one thing The Boy and I really want:
Instead of favors, we want to make a donation to charity.
Now I'd like to donate to the Fistula Foundation, but it might be a bit gruesome for a wedding reception. We could donate to cancer, but, well, I have this feeling that other people could use the money just as much. My grandmother has MS. The Boy's uncle has Parkinson's (very advanced). But either of those might be taken the wrong way, as well.
Does anyone have any ideas? Something that everyone could relate to, but doesn't get a lot of money or sponsorship would be best, I think. Which is why we can't think of anything, but hey. I'm also hoping to make it more of a worldwide fund or another country's funding, because most children in this country are doing eons better than 90% of the world, and they still get a lot of charity money.
The Boy and I both have lost people we care about to diseases. They're horrible, but we don't want to chose one person's disease, if that makes any sense. Which is why I'm leaning toward a cause that doesn't really touch people in the US...
Sigh. Like I said, please let me know if you have ideas.
