And Now for More Political Crap

2004-10-05 - 1:14 p.m.

I started talking to my grandmother yesterday, and she was telling me that EWTN (yes, that's right, the Catholic channel) is telling people to vote for Bush because he's pro-life.

God. Help. Us.

Do people just conveniently forget that Jesus was condemned to death in a trial? Yeah, that's right. Jesus. If you're a Christian, Bush? Is not your friend, nor is he pro-life.

I'm not saying this in a Pro-Kerry statement, either. God help me, I just want to run for President myself and get this over with. Unfortunately, I have eight years to go before that's legal. (34 years old, right?)

But that's what drives me nuts. Last weekend, I was talking to some friends, and one of them pointed out how bad it was to vote AGAINST someone. I can see the point. But I don't see the point in voting for someone for just one issue (gun control, abortion, gay rights), and I'm honestly afraid of having a theocracy in American when I don't even have the same religion as the President.

Pro-life, I thought, meant being pro all life. Not just the unborn. No matter what. Neither of the candidates are that. However, a democrat is more likely to fund a system to help out teenagers and college students to make other options besides abortion attractive.

EDITED IN RESPONSE TO A TRACEBACK: There are other means of help besides pro-choice Planned Parenthood. If you want to spend money to stop abortion, donate money to those institutions that are Pro-Life that help women and treat them with dignity.

Honestly, isn't that the way you want to go? Not force women to not do something, but make it something that's less desirable than any other option? Last time I checked, there were a lot of abortions before it was legal.

I know, I know, I'm opening myself for HUGE attacks here. All I am saying is that if the people who were specifically pro-life for the unborn donated all the money they spend on protests to pregnancy help centers for women and helped them in legal situations like getting jobs or halfway houses or helping them get the kids adopted or whatever and stopped stigmatizing women for being pregnant out of wedlock, then there would be less abortion, I think. That whole "let ye who has not sinned cast the first stone" idea seems to have dissolved in this matter, as well, and it just depresses me.

I am proudly Catholic. I love God. I love the Pope (who begged Bush not to start the war, by the way). I think the teachings of Christ are applicable today now more than ever.

It just seems the obvious ones go by the wayside.
